Something for everyone!

Something for everyone!

This was taken from the third floor of Alamo Antique Mall, the self proclaimed "Largest Antique Mall Downtown With Something For Everyone!" and they're not lying. Belt buckles made from old skulls, silly hats from the 20's, jewelry from even earlier, street lamps, street signs, a box of unused diapers from the 80's, false teeth... real teeth, taxidermy gone awry, a room the size of most apartments filled to the brim with thousands upon thousands of old crackly good-time-listenin' vinyl, furniture new(er) and old, every issue of life magazine, a beaver-pelt top hat from 1882, and so much more. You can spend half a day and a few hundred dollars here if you only give yourself the time to wander.

Oscillation Reduces Friction and Ensures Consistency
The JBOS-5 creates a one-inch oscillating action that reduces friction heat, thereby protecting your wood pieces and prolonging the life of the sleeve. Its main spindle support also runs on precision ball bearings and is oscillated by a heavy-duty worm and gear mechanism for reliable, consistent performance job after job.
Additionally, the oscillation gears run in a sealed, lubricated box to prolong their life and durability.

And thanks to the table inserts and a built-in, two-inch dust port, you won't have to worry about dust and debris falling into the motor and marring its performance, compromising your view of the workspace, or causing injuries and accidents.
Tilting Table for Bevel Sanding
To give you the flexibility to handle a variety of jobs and material sizes, the JBOS-5's table tilts to 45 degrees. This tilting ability also accommodates bevel sanding projects.
Safety Features for Smooth Operation

There are also built-in storage racks to keep spindles and table inserts handy and within safe and easy reach. About JET: A History of Sharing New, Feature-Rich Products
Opened in 1958 after the founder of the company, Leslie P. Sussman, took the first Boeing Jet Airplane trip from Seattle, Washington to Japan, JET began as a small dealer that sold air hoists and trolleys out of a single hardware store in Seattle. Over the years, JET has carried everything from snowmobiles, transmitter radios, and forklifts to nylon stockings, but by the early 1970s, metalworking had become the base of their business line. And by the 1980s, JET had expanded into the realm of woodworking. Today, you'll find that JET offers a wide range of popular woodworking tools that are backed with best-in-class features and excellent service.

Barnsdall Rio Grande Oil Company Station

Barnsdall Rio Grande Oil Company Station

The Barnsdall Rio Grande service station was built in 1929 and is one of the most architecturally significant service station in California and perhaps the United States. Constructed in the popular Spanish colonial revival style of its time, it was designed by the same architectural firm that was responsible for many of the attractive Richfield service stations of the same time period.

One of the most notable features of the station was its vertical elongation. It covered only 450 square feet at the base but soared 40 feet into the air. The third floor of the tower held a 2,000 gallon water storage tank which provided pressurized water to the station.

The station was situated at the entrance to the oil field owned by the Barnsdall-Rio Grande Oil Company and was intended to be a corporate showpiece. The first operator of the station was D.M. Tinsler. Under his management the station received a beautification award from the Garden Club of Santa Barbara and the Montecito Roadside Committee. The Montecito Roadside committee was particulary concerned about the unsightly accumulation of signage around service stations and along the roadways. The contest judges declared the grounds to be “finely kept” and relatively free from signs. In the years to come the station would receive many other awards for “excellent appearance”

The Palo Alto - Seacliff Beach, Rio Del Mar, California.

The Palo Alto - Seacliff Beach, Rio Del Mar, California.

October 2008

The Palo Alto - Seacliff Beach, Rio Del Mar, California.

The Palo Alto was a concrete ship built as a tanker at the end of World War I. She was built by the San Francisco Shipbuilding Company at the U.S. Naval Shipyard in Oakland, California. She was launched on May 29, 1919, too late to see service in the war.[1] Her sister ship was the SS Peralta.

She was mothballed in Oakland until 1929, when she was bought by the Seacliff Amusement Corporation and towed to Seacliff State Beach in Aptos, California. A pier was built leading to the ship, and she was sunk a few feet in the water so her keel rested on the bottom. There she was refitted as an amusement ship, with amenities including a dance floor, swimming pool and a cafe.

The company went bankrupt two years later and the ship cracked at the mid section. She was stripped of her fittings and left as a fishing pier. Eventually she deteriorated to the point were she was unsafe for even this use and was closed to the public. Today she remains at Seacliff Beach and serves as an artificial reef for marine life.

Naval Reserve Center

Naval Reserve Center

Naval Reserve Center
1948
Jackson, Mississippi (Hinds County)

....

The distinctive Naval Reserve Center, with its ship-like facade, opened in 1949 as a training facility for the Navy and Marine Corps. Complete with porthole windows and rounded ends, the two-story head house fronts a collection of Butler buildings, common to the World War II era. Jackson architect John L. Turner designed the building, which housed more than 300 sailors and Marines at any given time. Post-World War II reserve centers are becoming increasingly rare and, among those still in existence, Jackson’s Center is unique for its nautical motif.

The Reserve Center building featured offices, a drill hall, classrooms, medical facilities, bathroom and shower areas, a kitchen galley, and even a dental office. The nautical detailing of the head house continues on the interior, as evidenced by curved walls and glass, molding in the shape of ropes, and a compass pattern inlaid into the lobby floor. Even portions of the wood moldings emulate the waves of the ocean. At times, signal flags were placed on the roof, as if reservists were at sea.

The Naval Reserve Center was very active until the summer of 2000 when operations were moved to the Meridian Naval Air Station. Upon closing, ownership of the buildings reverted back to the State of Mississippi. The buildings have seen limited use in recent years and have fallen into a state of deterioration. The state has access to grant money from the Department of Archives and History to do exterior stabilization. However, the Department of Finance Administration will not approve the expenditure of the money if it is not a complete restoration since there is no planned use for the building.

Just in time for Hallowe'en, it sort of looks like Jack Skellington from Tim Burton & Henry Selick's 1993 stop-motion animated film The Nightmare Before Christmas is driving this ghostly white late-C3-generation Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, from circa 1980, but Jack Skellington's head is really just a plush thing dangling from the rear-view mirror.
